Let’s face the facts people, Bloor and Lansdowne is not the greatest of areas. Within walking distance of the TTC exit there are 2 strip joints, a Value Village, and *shudder* a Coffee Time. But don’t get me wrong, good deals and lap dances are sometimes just what you need to brighten your day.

However there is now an alternative that does not require a hot shower afterwards. A few blocks north of Bloor, on Lansdowne Ave is a small cafe that seems a bit out of place at first, especially when it leaves you feeling satisfied in your stomach and wallet.

Before I get into the experience I had with Starving Artist, let us go back to when I first heard and became intrigued by this place. On the morning of June 23rd, I woke up to a regular day and opted for a regular breakfast, some plain buttermilk pancakes with plain fake syrup. A few bites into the pancakes and I realized what I had really wanted that morning, a crisp light waffle. Disgruntled by my realization I took to twitter to let the world, and anyone who cared how I felt. I believe the exact tweet was this; “i’m making pancakes when i wish i was making waffles.” Now freed from my emotions as only twitter can achieve, a friend shot me back a reply within minutes allowing me to see that not far from where I lived a small indent of waffle paradise had opened. I had to go.

So I called up my friend Joel, one that I know would counterbalance my enjoyment of food with his bitchy honesty. We were a happy medium of delight and indifference. So when Wednesday morning rolled around, we ventured upwards to our destination, experiencing all that the area had to offer. This by the way is heightened with the current strike.

Upon entering the space, we are greeted by the owners and I automatically feel as though I have entered the home of some old friends, ready to sit back, eat, and just enjoy the company. We grab a table near the large fish tank in the back and begin to take in our surroundings. Photography lines the walls, a graffitied lion sits on the front counter and playing on a TV in the back is a selection of music videos directed by Spike Jonze. These guys have me hooked already and I haven’t even ordered yet.

The menu is small and precise, revolving around different variations of waffles and sandwiches. There is enough choice though that it is hard to choose what exactly we would like to order, so we decided to keep it simple. I would have the Breakfast Waffle ($9) and Joel would have the Waffle Benny ($9), both with a side of greens and fruit salad. We also quickly decide on their coffee which arrives promptly with a shot glass of cream on the side. It’s the little touches like that keep driving the hook deeper. Shortly after, we receive our meals, mine consisting of two poached eggs perched atop caramelized bacon and potato waffles. Joel’s the same but with a hollandaise sauce and real waffles. Needless to say I was in heaven, the eggs were poached to perfection, the bacon was salty and sweet, and the potato’s a crisp golden brown. The sides quickly followed suit and were refreshing and tasty; the fruit salad had an amazing combination of melons, pineapple, and blueberries. I accidentally forgot to talk to Joel until I was finished my meal, in which I produced a huge smile and the words “So, how was it?” He looks at me, and plainly states that it was good and that the mix of the eggs, hollandaise sauce, bacon and waffle was enjoyable.

Hopefully his lack of adjectives and my fountain of them will give you a clear idea of this place, and you decide that you should probably try Starving Artist. I’ll even go with you if you want, but don’t expect any conversation during the meal.

The above photos are of our meals, my apologizes for the shitty photography skills, an iPhone camera is shit.

i decided to review my lunch.

i wrote a review about a restaurant today, it’s my first one. but i enjoyed it and i think i may have had a love affair with adjectives. you don’t have to read if you don’t want to, just skip past, it’s cool.

this tumblr is a temporary hub for it, i’m gonna move it to another tumblr dedicated to toronto eats soon.

anyways, i’m sorry for the amount of space it’s about to take up on your dashboard.
